Above is the second batik that I did. My teacher made the drawing and I covered the lines with two layers of ink. The larger areas are the areas that we want to remain white after dying.

This is the first batik that I tried.

Here is the same batik but right side up. I have now dyed it twice and covered the areas I want to remain white, blue or green with wax so it can be dyed again.

This is my batik teacher Ebo. I'm so lucky that God opens the door for me to study with masters of their trades. Ebo has taught batik and African art all over West Africa. He's just about to complete is doctoral work in African arts in the Gambia.

Dear Family and Friends

Thank you for all your prayers concerning Girls Camp, we had a wonderful time. There were between 15-20 girls throughout the weekend. This year I had a group of younger girls, 12-16 years old. The women from the Oussouye Church were very engaged in the planning and also the leadership of the camp. For each topic we held large group discussions, where the women from the church would share their testimonies and stories from their lives and then girls would ask questions. It was a very Jola manner of the older women instructing the young. Our tie dye turned out wonderful as did our group quilt that we made based on the theme from the weekend, 1 Timothy 4:12. Thank you to all who sent supplies and donations for the Girls Camp.

Last weekend was my friend Karin's wedding. She is Marcel's niece and has had a boutique in Kabrousse for the last six years. She was the last women holding the fort in Kabrousse from the days Boris was pastoring there. A missionary has taken over the work there, releasing Karin to pursue other things in her life. She married a pastor from Dakar, Diedoune Santos.

Things are on the move at the Missionary Training Center today. Our electrician, Kokovi, is installing security lights around the house. Tom and Lorrie are busy moving into their house at the Mission. Pete is meeting with one of our Muslim neighbors helping him with some important paperwork and my friend Yama is visiting from one of the isolated river villages.

Thank you for all your prayers concerning Pete's health. He is doing much better. We have started cooking classes each Thursday at Astou and Marcel's home. Please continue to support Pete with encouraging emails, in prayer and financially if you are able.

Thank you for all you do in my own life to support Mission Senegal. I appreciate all the ways that you partner with this work to spread the Gospel.

Dear Family and Friends,

Thank you for all the prayers for the Oussouye “Ewang” ceremony. The 2,000 men and boys who came to dedicate their lives to the fetish and the Oussouye King have left the sacred forest. Life in Oussouye has returned to somewhat normal. One of the boys who was coming to my Bible study last year and was at the ceremony has come back around, one has not. Please pray that God would continue to speak into the darkness His truth and reveal it to many young people in Oussouye.

Kids Club changes each week due to children traveling for vacation and the rice season. I have a large group of new children this year and this makes me extremely happy. This month the kids will be learning more about how Awesome Jesus is. It's fun to watch the children from such varied backgrounds discussing Jesus among themselves. My Friday night teenager Bible study has not really taken off yet, partly due to vacation and Ewang. I have one young man coming out called Isador. Please pray for Isador that he would really hear God's voice and be healed of his epilepsy.

Please pray for my health. I'm feeling weary lately and it's been one little thing after another to trouble me. Pete has also not been well, pray for his health during his training program.

GIRLS CAMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Our annual Girls Camp is September 15, 16, 17 and 18^th. Please mark your calendars and pray with us each day that girls lives would be changed. Each of the women from the Oussouye church will be sharing a message on a different theme. We have tons of games and projects outside of the teaching time. Please pray that God blesses this camp abundantly.

I am back in Oussouye, Senegal for the 2011/12 Missions Training Year. I left Syracuse on June 28th. We traveled with Royal Air Moroc. Had a 13 hour layover in Casablanca where they put us up in an airport hotel with food and showers for the best layover I ever had. We arrived in Dakar with all our baggage. We had two great days of shopping there and then left for Ziguinchor with the boat Friday evening. After Ziguinchor another car ride to Oussouye and finally home!! We arrived at the training center where the water had been shut off. God miraculously sent rain all through the night so we were never without water.

We have cleaned up the training center and have started our work here in the village. Things are going well so far.

The project has been ongoing since December and is finally finished. Ok, mostly finished. Dear Family and Friends

After two wonderful weeks of ministry and fellowship, the team from Lighthouse Christian Fellowship has returned to the blustering wind chills of western New York. I want to thank all of you that contributed to this trip financially, logistically, in prayer, THANK YOU! I really felt the entire time as though God was linking the two churches as family. Pastor Dave Herr had great fellowship with the elders of the Oussouye church. The women connected through sharing of worship, prayer and food. Throughout the trip we saw that each church served the other in many different ways and that was beautiful to see.

It has always been my vision to inspire churches to see and feel the need and call of a hopeless world outside of themselves. In Oussouye we are seeing our work on the islands advance. We visited Hiitu and Vendaye with the L.H. Team. One man started a friendship with Jesus on the island of Hiitu. I was able to share Christ with a young teacher while we were there. Marcel opened the door for us to share Christ with an entire group of teachers and the church discussed traveling to more islands to meet them. We will soon be returning with gifts from Samaritans Purse for project Christmas Child. We are receiving 500 gifts to distribute with the Gospel. Please pray for this endeavor that many would know the love and care of Jesus Christ.

We are in the final months of the missionary training program for this school year. I am so thankful how God lays his plans out and they so perfectly weave everything together. Christine Feather, my missionary student, feels called to youth ministry in Israel. This year God has launched in my own life, a ministry to teenage girls. Christine has been on the ground level with all of this and made strong contributions to this new ministry. One of the girls she has been in close contact with, Pauline, came to church for the first time last week. We continue with our monthly girls meeting and next year I expect Girls Camp 2011 to be better than ever.

In March I will be joining a prayer tour across the Sahara. My first experience with the turmoil of such an empty place was in 1996 when I participated in a prayer tour across Mauritania. Ever since then, I have wanted to return to the desert, specifically to Mali and Niger. This year Jesus is opening up the door for me to fulfill that desire. Several things draw me to these nations. Mauritania, Senegal, Mali and Ghana are all linked together because of one tribe. This tribe, over hundreds of years, migrated south through these nations finally settling in Ghana. Niger is one of the poorest nations of the world. Both nations are landlocked and have little in the way of natural resources. They are over 90% Muslim, nations in desperate need of a savior and of hope. We are going to pray for the work of Christ, for the people and their nation. The travel through these countries is precarious and long. Please pray for our protection and favor with visa's to get in. A team of four people from my church in Syracuse will be going. The trip is $1600. Please consider supporting me with a special financial gift for this trip.

Dear Family and Friends,

Merry Christmas! I hope you are all enjoying this holiday season!

I want to thank you for all your prayers and share with you how God has answered some of them. Ismael reappeared this week. He was in Dakar with his family since September when I last spoke to him. His phone was shut off and his brother told me previously that he hadn't heard from him. Thankfully Ismael is doing well and was attending a great church in Dakar. Yesterday when he stopped by to greet me we ended up sharing Christ with a whole group of workers who were at my house.

Which leads me to testimony number two. The awning project has started. All of the materials have been purchased and delivered. The metal guy has started building the awnings. Also the parts have been purchased for the new hot water tank to be installed. Hooray! Thanks for your prayers for these projects. Please pray the workers do a good job building the awnings and installing the hot water tank.

The ELECTRICITY CRISIS IS OVER!!! HOORAY!!!! Over the last month we have only had a few hours without electricity. Apparently the situation has been regulated in Ziguinchor for all of us! I'm so thankful, that was really a drag!

Our first Girls Night went fabulous in November. We had about 10 girls. This month I have been getting the word out about it. My vision is to gather a group of girls who are really interested in knowing God more and invite lot's of girls who don't know Jesus to listen and experience him. Saturday is our December meeting. We are going to decorate Christmas cookies, play games, worship and one of the girls is bringing a five minute teaching.

I was thinking back yesterday of the different lives that have been touched by our open house on Wednesdays. So many different names and faces over the last three years. Our house continues to be filled with, sometimes 45 kids on Wednesday afternoon. Last week we had a couch full of Muslim boys who had never been to Bible Study before. They weren't really sure what was happening. They loved singing with us though. Another Muslim boy, Bachery, shared a prayer request for his family. The teaching last week was on Nicodemus and how he sought out Jesus' without anyone else knowing it. I gave Bachery a Bible when he left. He says to me, but I'm not Christian. I said it's ok, just go ahead and read about Jesus. Yesterday Popsaigh, a new club kid came to church prayer with us. I have another new little friend named Ammadou who just can't get enough of me and my house. He helped decorate the Christmas tree on Saturday, spent all of Sunday and most of Monday here. At church on Sunday he was sticking his head through the door but wouldn't come inside. He's another Pular boy from a Muslim family.

Please pray for all of my activities over the next 3.5 months. The 2010 Missionary Training Program is more than half over. In January, I'll be headed to Dakar to take care of some personal visa and passport business. I am excited about my mother's visit and the team from Lighthouse. This will be their first visit to Oussouye. I hope the first of many to come! Christine and I will be traveling through the Cassamance Region at the end of January. The assistant Pastor from my church in Syracuse is coming to Senegal in February. I am also looking forward to the return of the Dynamic Parlato Duo!!

Termites

Yes Africa is known for it's GIANT termite mounds. I battle them in my yard as well. They bother me the most when the rainy season starts and they flutter out of their mountain of sand and in their thousands try to get into my house. So I asked my gardener to bring their houses down. These particular termite mounds have only been there for about a year. From one mound Daniel pulled out the queen, this big squirmy worm, their precious leader. The second mound was built around a tree and Daniel was digging in such a way that it wouldn't fall down in a dangerous manner. While digging he heard a noise and jumped out of the hole quickly and the whole hill fell over. God totally saved Daniel from the termites.

Tabaski

Tabaski is the Muslim holiday that celebrates Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son and God's provision of the lamb. Sheep are sold ALL over Senegal during the season before Tabaski and it's even more common to travel with sheep on the roof of your car. I have been invited several times to pass the holiday in Loudia Olof. Loudia is one of two primarily Muslim villages on the Elinkin road about an hour walk from my house. Christine and I set out on the walk to Loudia chatting along the way. We were welcomed into the village and met the families of the seven or so high school girls I know from there.

After the sheep are killed, for breakfast they cook up the liver. As we were making the rounds of greeting everyone we were served a taste of the liver every where we went. I saw children playing with the sheep's severed head. The food was however VERY delicious. In one house curiously enough we met some Christian girls who had come home for the holiday. Just before we left I was able to share more about friendship with God with one of the girls we met.

Women's Seminar in Ziguinchor

In November we attended a seminar for the Christian women of our region. There were about 30 women who were able to come from all the villages of the Cassamance. Things really dragged for the first day. Everyone seemed very guarded unwilling to open up about their problems. I saw a vision on Saturday morning of the ladies laying their burdens down in the center of our circle. The word was that if they didn't lay their burdens down today they were going to return to their villages still carrying these heavy loads. After I spoke several other ladies spoke about what they sensed had been happening spiritually over the previous day. The ladies began to open up about their struggles and they DANCED!! They danced and laid down their burdens in the center of our circle. I believe many women were refreshed and renewed.

I love to invite people into my home for Thanksgiving and share our American holiday with them. This year Christine and I divided up the cooking and placed all the food on one large platter in the traditional Senegalese style. The meat in the center and the fixings around the edges. There were ten young people who joined with us in the feast. The day ended with a chance to skype with friends in the United States. It was a wonderful holiday.

Some friends of mine recently decided to leave the mission field. I inquired about some things in their home that I always loved. In 2008 I spent Christmas with them and enjoyed loafing on the couch in their guest house reading a book for my vacation. And the couch did indeed need a new home. Along with a table, stove and some other odds and ends that makes the Missionary Training Center a more comfortable place to live and study.

This Wednesday it was fun to see my kids use whatever they had to play games. I had to paddles that the bouncy balls had fallen off of, so they created a new game. Ping pong. They used my old table or they just played on the tiles. They used the clothesline for bad-mitten. They also created their own version of Sorry and were actually playing some of the other more unusual card games.

For this Bible study the kids had to put fruit on the tree in order to save the tree. Problem was they missed the tree with no fruit on it and added all the fruit to the tree that already had fruit. It was still cool though.

Thank you so much for your prayers for the girls camp and the ongoing electricity crisis. The girls camp was wonderful. The house was full up to our ears and the girls had an amazing time. On Sunday afternoon they were begging to stay several more days, promising to fast if they could stay longer. I learned a lot about running a camp for teenage girls in Senegal and lot's of things I will do differently next year. The churches were all very excited about the girls camp and look forward to sending their own girls next year. Some of the people who were touched most my the camp were the leaders and staff themselves. My friend Astou's sister Baby, did all the cooking for us. She used to come out to the Oussouye church and then married a Muslim man and stopped. She joined in all the singing, dancing and discussions when she wasn't working. She also listened to all the teachings from the kitchen. At night she shared a room with Marie Claude from Oukoute, and apparently talked her ear off both nights for hours. Marie Claire, Garard's wife from Kahinda, was also deeply touched during the camp. Marie Claire is in her twenties and came to camp to help out with the girls. She was baptized in the Catholic church when she was young but hasn't yet made a real commitment to separate her life and be raised to that newness she can have with Christ himself. After the camp she told us that she was ready to be baptized. We were all very excited about this. I got to know several girls who have been in the back ground of things at the church for some time. They were sort of drawn out of the shadows and thrust into the foreground with the rest of the girls. We also had a new light thrown on some of the girls we thought we knew rather well. We are still praying and asking God, which of these girls are the ones he would have us to invest in this coming school year. Pray with us that God would lead us into deeper relationships with each of these girls.

The electricity crisis continues in Senegal. We hear new and different stories every day about where things stand nationally and regionally. Nothing we have heard has amounted to much. We are still without electricity 12-18 hours a day and water most or all of that time. I bought a giant barrel last week to store water in, this has been a big help. Please pray that when we do have electricity we are able to get our work done that requires our computers. Pray also for all our electrical equipment that God would protect it.

I have been looking at different ways to improve our Wednesday evening Bible study. I generally have about ten teenagers at the Bible study and a slew of children in the middle of my living room floor. Solange has been assisting me with worship and that has been fantastic. They need some instruction as to what worship actually is but it's a step forward from me leading the same six songs in French every week. Last night was awesome. I explained to them that I was going to ask at the beginning of every meeting “What did God speak to you during last week.” Christine and I gave a few examples. Then our lesson was on how to spend time with God everyday. I told them their homework was to come back and tell me what God spoke to them. I have a solid group of teenagers, I just need help with the kids and the language barrier so that we can all get to know each other better.

We are traveling this weekend to the village of Djembering to share in fellowship with the church there and minister whatever God would give us. We are going to begin traveling more frequently during the next few months to Kabrousse, Mlumpe and Ziguinchor.

The awning project is being talked about again. PLEASE pray that Marcel makes himself available to see this house project completed.

Last month the women in the Oussouye church started meeting separately from the women who are working at the jam house. Long story short, this is working out much better for us. Prayer is never interupted by work. We all want to be there and to know Christ more. Pray this continues to work well and that God would raise up a leader. I am the default leader at present, it's not really my vision to lead a ladies prayer meeting. I'm willing to serve but these ladies have been leading their own group for years without missionary help. Last week we had so much fun opening a box of shoes sent my church in Syracuse, NY. Thanks UCF Ladies!!!!!

My friend Marietou's mother is very ill and the family has all gone to the Gambia. I cannot reach Marietou because of the difference in phone systems between here and the Gambia. Please pray for her mothers health and salvation. I have not seen Ishmael and Muhammad in several weeks. Please pray that they come back around and reconnect with us.

Christine has finished three months of the Missionary Training Program. She will be moving out of observing to more participation and harder challenges. Pray for Christine for the finances she needs to meet her monthly budget. Pray also for Christine to learn to learn the humility of being a missionary and to learn to manage her time. Pray Christine is able to build relationships of depth here with our friends and neighbors.

The ladies group in my church in Syracuse, NY sent a box full of shoes for the ladies group in the church in Oussouye. They had so much fun searching through the box for the perfect shoe. After they had received the shoes they sang and worshiped in thanks for what they had received.

Couples Dinner in Kahinda

In July the church in Oussouye started planning a couples dinner. "Couples" applies to me also, even though I am single. Not sure how but it does. There are several women in the church who's husbands are not Christians. So the dinner is a time for everyone to hang out. This month the dinner was in Kahinda at Gerard Sambou's house. This was so awesome. And so Jola!!! We sat under the mango trees on benches and mats, enjoying the breeze and the shade. We shared a Bible study in the shade of the trees. Everyone contributed to the discussion.

For dinner we were served fish fried and marinated. The fish had been caught that morning by Gerard's brother. Rice for dinner from Gerard's rice fields. And a chicken from his yard on top. Finally manioc or cassava boiled and cut into chunks for dessert. I was so full after the huge and wonderful dinner.

We walked home in the rain, dodging puddles and lightning. Seriously an amazing night of fellowship!!!

I was just reading about the good Samaritan. There is a list at the end of the chapter of people you may honestly say or not so honestly admit that you think you are better than. Last week I had a boy show up to kids club with a shriveled hand. I asked if I could pray for his hand that Jesus would heal it. This chalk board lesson is about Jesus healing the man with the shriveled hand on the sabbath. The judgmental pharisees are looking on in anger and awe that Jesus would break their religious traditions. It's a good lesson that our traditions, habits and even religious practices should not get in the way of love and doing whatever God would ask of us.

This is my friend Solange. Last year we were praying for her arms. Her bones was leaking. I know that sounds crazy but it literally was. She had to change the wrappings everyday and was unable to play like the other kids. Last year a German Missionary found some sponsors for her to have surgery in Dakar. A few others sponsored her to go to a girls camp in Dakar. During the camp Solange really came to meet Christ himself. During this time her arm was also healing. Her arm is completely healed now.

Our friend Muhammed wanted to open a bike shop somewhere outside of Oussouye so he could make some money and clear up some problems he created in Oussouye. We thought he was headed to Djembering to open the shop. Last Thursday we were headed to Kabrousse for prayer and I hear my name being shouted. Oh and there is Muhammed. He found a spot under a tree to fix motor bikes and he had already started saving to pay off some debts.

This game was circle soccer. You could get people out by shooting the ball between their knees or the space between you and a neighbor. If the ball found it's way through you had to turn around the first time, the second time you were out. Super fun Game.

There is this new family of baby ducks that either live on our property or wander over to our property to find snacks and play in the water.

When it rains for long period of times our paths around the property turn into lakes.

I love the rain because it blesses the land with water for the crops to grow. It does hinder our lives a bit but I'm thankful for it. This year I have been able to change my attitude about it and be thankful each day instead of angry.
